COMPETITIONS

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO ATTEND & WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

Apart from normal weekly lessons both the Recreational & Competitive Academy programs have a yearly program of competitions & events. For Recreational Program students, participation in competitive events is “optional”. Each year a Calendar of Events is provided for all families.

If your child is eligible & ready to participate in a competition, an entry form will be sent to your child approximately 8 weeks prior to the competition to inform parents of all the particulars. All Competitions have a “closing date” for entries to be received at our office. This is generally 3 – 5 weeks prior to the competition date. To be eligible to attend entries must be forwarded to our office by the closing date. Late entries CANNOT be accepted.

Gymnast’s participating in competitions are expected to be attired in the Compulsory Academy Uniform for their level. This information is provided to registered students in the Annual Amendments booklet or on the Academy Noticeboard. If you are unsure of what the compulsory uniform is for your child please check this with the office staff. The Academy office only holds a small stock of some of the uniform items so if your child needs a uniform please order these 6 to 8 weeks prior to the event. Most Academy lycra garments are purchased directly via the Sylvia P website – www.sylviap.com.au/team-wear

On the day of the competition it is important the gymnasts are well presented. Hair should be neatly done with ribbons or scrunchies for the girls in the Academy colours (Navy, Aqua & White). Some girls’ competitions require different coloured ribbons and you will be notified if this is the case. It is also recommended that gymnast’s bring their gym bag with a small bottle of water (no juice, cordial or sports drinks are allowed in the gym). Warm clothing (tracksuit) is also required in the cooler months.

A Calender of Events is also provided at the beginning of the year or when your child becomes a registered student. See below for PDF download of the calenders.

COMPETITIONS

The Academy conducts 3 Competitions for students each year:-
  • MINI OLYMPICS

This competition is conducted once per year for gymnasts in our school age programs.

The 'MINI OLYMPICS' format is a similar structure to the school "house" structure for sports carnivals. All gymnasts in each session will be placed into a team/colour (4 teams only). Points will be allocated for Team Apparatus placing’s (1st to 4th) and overall placing’s (1st to 4th). These points will be added to the overall points for the team/colour for the entire weekend. The team/colour with the most points at the end of the last session of the weekend will be awarded the title of the overall Mini Olympic Champions for the year and will be awarded the Perpetual Cup Trophy.

Awards are presented for Team 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th on each apparatus & 1st Overall Team in each session.

For MAG Level 0 - 2 this competition may also be an opportunity to Level test at the coach’s discretion. For WAG Gym Skills this event is considered a practice competition for the girl’s upcoming level test at the Spring Time Challenge.

  • ANNUAL ACADEMY CHAMPIONSHIPS

There are two Academy Championship competitions conducted each year - one for our Teams program and one for our Recreational Program. Gymnasts from our Pre-Prep flyers program to our highest level are eligible to participate once a year.

For WAG Level 1 – 3 & MAG Level 0 - 2 this competition may also be an opportunity to Level test at the coach’s discretion.

  • SPRING-TIME CHALLENGE

This competition may be conducted once per year for WAG / MAG Gym Skills gymnasts.

This competition is generally a “Team Competition”. Gymnasts are put into a small team (3 – 6 gymnast’s depending on participant numbers).

This competition may also be an opportunity to Level test at the coach’s discretion.

  • INVITATIONAL COMPETITIONS

Various Affiliated Clubs in the Brisbane, Gold & Sunshine Coast & Darling Downs areas offer Invitational competitions throughout the year. Both Team & Individual competitions are conducted. Gymnast's eligible for these competitions are advised by their coach.

  • REGIONAL, STATE & NATIONAL COMPETITIONS

These events are conducted by Gymnastics Queensland (GQ) & Gymnastics Australia (GA). For further information on these events please go to the GQ or GA website. A link to these sites can be found in our CONTACTS & LINKS.

WHY DO WE CONDUCT GYMNASTICS COMPETITIONS AT THE ACADEMY?

In house Academy competitions are pencilled into our year to add variety, excitement, & to give the gymnast's the opportunity to "show off" their skills to their families & friends. Competitions are displays - Gymnastics is a sport and like all sports some form of event is condeucted to display the activities.

Competitions serve many purposes in our program.

  • It allows us to set goals in a time period
  • A group can work together toward achieving something together
  • The gymnasts can show off their new skills
  • It provides an opportunity for personal development as the participants perform their routines to an audience.
  • It is an opportunity to test for your level badge at the coaches' discretion or improve the quality of the level your child is currently at.
Sometimes participants win and sometimes they don't, but that's life and something all children need to experience, to assist them in life's journey. Competitions are healthy if the right approach is taken by all concerned and competitions are views as "fun".

OTHER ACADEMY ANNUAL EVENTS

  • SAFETY AWARENESS & FIRE DRILL WEEK.

Lawnton Academy is committed to ensuring that all reasonable steps are taken to maintain the safety & welfare of all students, coaches & visitors. In demonstrating our duty of care we conduct one Safety Awareness Week & two fire drills per year.

Random fire drills are also conducted throughout the year. On the sounding of the Fire Whistle all persons on the premises at the time must evacuate to our designation marshalling area (the side car-park).

  • PRESENTATION WEEKS

Presentation weeks are conducted for the majority of the Academy programs. Parents are invited to bring their camera for the last 5 minutes of class in this week as incentive awards are presented to the gymnasts at the end of their class. Dates are provided on your child's Calendar of Events.

  • LAWNTON ACADEMY - NIGHT OF EXCELLENCE

This event is conducted each year for our Team's Program students. The purpose of the event is to present our Annual awards and to recognise our valued volunteers. It generally occurs at the end of the competition year.
